Case Study - IPF

Background

IPF is a large organization, with over 10,000 employees. IPF has been producing e-Learning materials for over 8 years, with the foundation of its central training department, MAPA. They have discovered that individual e-Learning has many advantages when implemented for knowledge refreshing and enrichment purposes. Before implementing the Composica Enterprise solution, they had used PowerPoint to produce the learning content and build HTML pages for assessment purposes. The training department staff includes training professionals without technical or programming skills.

Challenges:

  • The combination of PowerPoint presentations with HTML assessments created various problems: The assessment method (HTML) required the intervention of a programmer for its creation and even for its editing. The different environments resulted in a cumbersome solution, as versions changed and linkage was hardly maintained.
  • Lack of interactivity: The nature of the PowerPoint solution lacked interactivity. The student was usually passive throughout the learning experience.
  • Updating and distribution: The content was packaged on CDs that were distributed across the organization. This made the inclusion of voice and video possible, as size was not an issue. However this distribution method became problematic when editing was required. In order to edit content, MAPA had to discard all the old CDs and produce new ones. This increased costs and wasted resources. Web-based distribution of the e-Learning materials was not possible because they were too large (60MB-120MB), and the diverse computing environments sometimes created viewing problems.

The Solution:

Composica Enterprise was a perfect choice to solve the challenges mentioned above.

  • Requires no programming: The training staff is independent and does not rely on the availability of programmers to produce or edit the content.
  • Includes assessments as an integral part of the course: The assessments are created from within the system and are closely related to the content. The student can receive instant feedback as scores are calculated instantly. The scores can also be exported to other systems, facilitating communications and external evaluations.
  • Interactive learning experience: The interactivity creates a more compelling and enjoyable learning experience. The student can interact with the content, move objects, and solve puzzles, etc.
  • Browser-based content viewing: The course is web-based, facilitating downloads and making CDs distribution unnecessary. This solves the editing problem as well, as any updates are immediately implemented, and viewed by all the users.
  • Structured content creation: Composica helps authors develop their training methodologies, as it allows for a more structured creation process. Its hierarchical content structure (content tree) helps authors build a more structured course.
  • Reusable objects: Composica Enterprise flexible object oriented capabilities dramatically shorten the development time of new content, as objects are more effectively reused.
